We know that everyone wants the best care for their pets.
A pet health plan is a great way to take care of your extended family members, but what is it, and is it worth it?
What is a pet health plan?
A pet health plan is essentially a monthly fee, or a subscription, you pay your vet to break down the general costs of having a pet.
It can vary massively from practice to practice, both in price and what’s included, but typically a pet health plan is likely to save you money in the long-term. You can see the cost of our pet plans here
What does a pet health plan cover?
Your fee will probably cover your usual expenses – think fleeing and worming treatments and routine vaccinations.
Some pet health plans offer a discount on consultations, medications, dental checks and surgeries too, and many even offer a free or discounted check-up with your vet.
It’s important to check with your own veterinary surgery to find out what is – or, more importantly, what isn’t – included in your plan.
For dogs and cats, we offer a primary vaccination course or yearly booster, kennel cough vaccine, monthly flea and worming treatment, a six-month check up with a nurse, two nurse clinics a year (which include nail clipping, anal glands and a weight check) and 10% off prescriptions, procedures and diagnostics.
For rabbits, our saver plans offer a primary vaccination course or yearly booster, unlimited nail clips, a six-month check-up with a nurse, one Rearguard treatment per year, 20% off dental treatment and x-rays and 20% off prescriptions, procedures and diagnostics.
Do I need a pet health plan?
The answer to this question depends on a lot of factors.
The free or discounted checks are a great opportunity for vets to get to know your pet and find early warning signs of disease, so if these checks are included in your plan, it may benefit you later down the line… not to mention, easy access to your vet means you have someone to ask questions to and reassure you should you need it.
If you have a pet which needs regular trips to the vet, such as a dog needing flea treatment, having a plan in place where these costs are included will likely save you money.
What pets can get a pet health plan?
Most veterinary practices offer pet health plans for dogs and cats – and we offer them for rabbits too.
While pets of any age can get a pet health plan, there may be other options for you if you’ve recently welcomed a puppy or kitten to your family, as care in their first year is different.
It’s also a great opportunity to get your pet used to going to the vets! Get a treat, have a fuss, become familiar with the staff and enjoy the process. Your pet will remember their positive experiences and learn to associate the space with good memories – rather than only attending when they feel poorly. This will make future examinations and treatment much less frightening for them!
How does a pet health plan differ from insurance?
Pet health plans and insurance are very different, and it’s important to know the difference.
Your pet health plan is in place to break down the routine costs of owning a pet.
If your pet falls ill or hurts itself, it won’t be covered by your health plan, and it will be up to you or your insurer to fund treatment.
Are pet health plans worth it?
Overall, it depends on your situation, the age and health of your pet, as well as the prices of individual practices. We hope this blog has helped you consider your options and informed you a bit more about what is out there for you as a pet owner.
