Evaluation of the bowels using cameras is a very valuable, minimally invasive tool for many acute and chronic conditions. Gastro-intestinal complaints often require many tests for a full diagnosis and endoscopy allows the final piece of the puzzle to be acquired via direct visualisation and biopsy of the stomach, duodenum and colon.

Endoscopy is also excellent for minimally invasive foreign body removal.

Indications

• Acute or Chronic vomiting
• Regurgitation
• Swallowing complaints
• Inappetence and weight loss
• Chronic diarrhoea
• Blood in stools
• Changes in faecal size, shape and frequency
• Foreign body removal

Outcomes

• Diagnosis (via biopsy) of gastric and intestinal chronic medical conditions, eg inflammatory diseases.
• Diagnosis (via biopsy) of tumours
• Foreign body removal
• Diagnosis of oesophageal abnormalities eg megaoesophagus, hiatal hernia
