Giving Cody a second chance at life

Giving Cody a second chance at life

At Southwater Veterinary Group, we’re incredibly proud of the work we do every day – but every so often, a case comes along that truly reminds us why we do it.

We had the privilege of treating a nine-month-old German Shepherd called Cody, who had been referred to us by another veterinary practice. From the very start, we knew it was going to be an unusual and challenging case.

Rare congenital condition

Cody had been born with an extremely rare congenital condition, which meant his urinary tract hadn’t formed properly. This made it very difficult – and uncomfortable – for him to urinate, and more worryingly, it was causing repeated, life-threatening infections.

Without intervention, his quality of life and life expectancy were both very limited.

Shropshire veterinary referral service

We regularly take referrals from practices across the West Midlands and Wales who need complex surgical support. Our team carries out advanced procedures, including ultrasound and CT imaging, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and complex soft tissue surgery. Even so, this case was unusual – none of us had ever seen a dog with this exact condition before.

In simple terms, Cody’s body didn’t give him a proper way to relieve himself. That’s distressing for any dog, and clearly not a sustainable situation.

Advanced practitioner in surgery

The operation, carried out by founder and vet Ryan Davis, an advanced practitioner in surgery with more than 20 years experience, required some creative thinking and delicate work. Ryan effectively had to create a new way for Cody to urinate. It was a long and intricate procedure, but a successful one!

Seeing Cody recover and begin to enjoy life without constant discomfort has been incredibly rewarding for Ryan and the team. He’s a lovely dog, and knowing that we’ve been able to give him a second chance after such a difficult start means a great deal to all of us.

Collaboration between veterinary practices

Cases like Cody’s highlight the importance of collaboration between veterinary practices and the value of complex care when it’s needed most.

We’re proud to support fellow vets through referrals and training, and even prouder when that expertise leads to life-changing outcomes.
